Hong Kong ‘King of Supporting Actors’ Benz Hui dies at 76

HONG KONG, Oct 28 — Veteran Hong Kong actor Benz Hui, affectionately known as the “King of Supporting Actors,” passed away on the morning of October 28 at the age of 76.

The Straits Times reported that his family confirmed the news through close friend and Hong Kong TV host Maria Luisa Leitão, stating that Hui had succumbed to multiple organ failure resulting from cancer.

He was just a week shy of his upcoming birthday on November 4.

Sing Tao Headline first reported Hui’s hospitalisation yesterday and that he was in critical condition.

Celebrities such as Chow Yun-Fat who worked with Hui on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and frequent co-star Charmaine Sheh (You’re Hired, Line Walker and Themis) were seen visiting Hui at the hospital.

In recent years, Hui was best known for his role as “Foon Hei Gor” in TVB’s Line Walker franchise.

He had gradually stepped back from acting and relocated to Singapore with his family to enjoy a semi-retired life.

Hui married his wife, Angeli Lung, in 1992 after meeting at a friends’ gathering.

They have a daughter Charmaine Hui, born in 1997 when Hui was 49.
