‘Just stick to social media’: Malaysian star Remy Ishak calls out fame-chasing actors, actresses lacking dedication

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — Award-winning Malaysian actor Datuk Remy Ishak has urged local actors and actresses to take their craft more seriously.

Speaking to local media during the production and cast reveal of upcoming horror film Khadam, Remy said some in the industry were more focused on chasing popularity rather than giving their best on set.

“It’s hard to find actors and actresses who are serious nowadays. Sorry to say, but I’ve met a lot who are not ready.

“If you want to act, be serious about it. If popularity is what you’re looking for, it’s better to just stick to your social media and followers, no need to go into acting.

“Even though I’m not a film school graduate, when it comes to work, you need to have some sense of responsibility,” he said.

Remy added that some were more concerned about appearances than the messages they were supposed to convey through their films.

“Maybe they are chasing followers instead of impacting people with the message they are supposed to deliver.

“The message has somewhat become meaningless.

“Sometimes I ask them about the meaning and values behind some of the scenes they are shooting — and they can’t provide an answer. All they know is they want to look good on screen,” he said.

His remarks came after he praised the dedication shown by Indonesian actress Aghniny Haque during Khadam’s script-reading session.

Remy, known for his role in Pulang, will star alongside Aghniny, Jun Lojong, Siti Khadijah Halim, and child actors and siblings Zarra Zhaf and Karl’ El.

Khadam, directed by Syamyl Othman — who helmed the 2023 reboot of the cult classic 1987 horror film Rahsia — is set in 1950s Malaysia.

Remy also revealed he has been on a vegan diet for the past month in preparation for his role, aiming to reduce his weight from 85kg to 79kg.

Production is scheduled to begin after Malaysia Day on September 16, with the film expected to be released in 2026.
