KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — Tickets for the 2026 restaging of Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical sold out within two hours of going on public sale, with more than 22,000 people still queuing online as of 10pm yesterday.
The overwhelming response comes nearly two decades after the homegrown production first graced the stage, returning this time with a reimagined staging and a fresh generation of performers.
Director Tiara Jacquelina, who co-created the original production, described the public’s response as overwhelming and deeply humbling in a statement today.
“I honestly don’t quite have the words for what happened tonight. Twenty years after we first brought Puteri Gunung Ledang to the stage, to know that Malaysians still hold this story so close to their hearts and that a whole new generation wants to discover it is incredibly moving,” she said.
Tiara added that the response was an encouraging sign for Malaysian theatre and the performing arts industry, reflecting sustained public interest in local stories, homegrown performers and original productions.
The 2026 production will take place at its new home, the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC) at Sunway Square, running from October 31 to November 15.
Tiara acknowledged that the sell-out has set high expectations for the Enfiniti creative team, who are now immersed in rehearsals as opening night draws near.
“My responsibility is very simple: we have to deliver. And not merely deliver what audiences remember or expect, we have to go beyond it,” she said.
The keen public response has also drawn interest from other parts of Malaysia, sparking discussions about extending the production beyond its current season.
However, Tiara said no additional performances have been confirmed, as the team remains wholly focused on delivering an extraordinary show for the upcoming season.
“Nothing is confirmed, and right now our absolute focus is on delivering an extraordinary show. But after seeing this response, of course we have to explore what more might be possible,” she said. — Bernama
