PETALING JAYA, Sept 10 — Hong Kong’s “Heavenly King” Aaron Kwok is bringing his star power to Kuala Lumpur this month as his latest film My First of May opens the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation 2025.
Running from September 20 to 28 at Aurum Theatre, The Exchange TRX, the nine-day celebration of Hong Kong cinema promises red-carpet glamour, powerful stories and rare chances for Malaysian fans to get up close with their favourite stars.
Kwok, who will attend the opening ceremony and join post-screening talks, said he was thrilled to return to Malaysia with a project close to his heart.
“I’m so happy that My First of May is the opening film in the Kuala Lumpur stop. Malaysian audiences have always been supportive of Hong Kong films, especially realistic stories with strong emotions. This film is about a fallen athlete learning to take responsibility for his family, and I believe it will touch audiences deeply,” he said.
The award-winning actor described his character, Deng Shuyan, as a man struggling against life’s setbacks but refusing to give in. “Even when life weighs him down, his spirit of perseverance never fades. For him, fighting for his family is the ultimate expression of endurance.”
Kwok’s fans will also get another treat: a special re-screening of his acclaimed 2019 drama I’m Livin’ It, which earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
But the gala isn’t just about Kwok. The programme spans six films that showcase the diversity of Hong Kong cinema, including the adrenaline-pumping Fight For Tomorrow starring rising talent Locker Lam, and documentary Four Trails by Robin Lee.
Director James Hung, who will also attend, called the gala “a powerful platform to share the love and connection between filmmakers and audiences”.
Action directors MJ Chan and Ken Law will bring behind-the-scenes insights into Hong Kong’s signature action filmmaking legacy.
The excitement spills beyond the cinema too. Talks at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology, and an exhibition titled Weaving Dreams: Artistry in Film will deepen fans’ connection to the craft. Fans can also snag exclusive crossover souvenirs designed by Hong Kong illustrator Toballki, inspired by the featured films.
Josie Lin, executive director of the Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA), which is organising the gala with Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and GSC Movies, said the Kuala Lumpur edition embodies the theme of “Endeavour”.
“From opening films to forums and exhibitions, every element is connected by creativity and perseverance,” she said.
