KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — As Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to lead the Malaysian box office, Stephen Chow’s highly anticipated Kung Fu Soccer has made a strong debut at No. 2.

A spiritual successor and standalone sequel to Chow’s beloved 2001 comedy Shaolin Soccer, the film marks his return to the director’s chair after a seven-year break.

The film brings Chow’s trademark mo lei tau (nonsensical) humour into 2026, blending slapstick comedy with sports and martial-arts action.

While some may question whether that style still resonates with modern audiences, its nostalgic pull appears to be drawing fans back to cinemas.
